We have received our next thimbleful of Domaine Alain Verset Cornas. Since 2016 Alain’s daughter Emmanuelle has taken over the making of the wines (hence the new label and name)

Esteemed Rhône Valley authority - John Livingstone Learmonth writes -

"Alain Verset is the son of the late Louis Verset & nephew of the cult figure Nöel Verset, a confirmed part of the Cornas fabric. He works the family vineyard at the weekends, and in a local factory during the week. His daughter Emmanuelle took over in 2016, and things are on the up here. Raising is in younger casks, and handling is more gentle, amounting to an uplift in the fine tuning of the Cornas. From 2017 there has been a Viognier from the plain of Cornas."

2019 Cornas

“Good dark red robe; the bouquet serves a bonny, gentle aroma of cooked blackberry, a note of dried herbs, sweet raspberry present, too. The palate combines a flavour of pine with a rolling red berry content, tasty pockets within, fruit that captures the imagination. There is a cedar, bosky development on the close, with a note oiliness in the texture. It’s a genuine, hand made Cornas, unforced and natural, has charm and supple features”. 14°. From mid-2022, can tick over nicely. 2035-37 July 2021

Very lively and fresh, a touch balsamic, it leaps out of the glass at this stage. Woody herbs and a char in the background. Medium-bodied, fresh and drinkable style. All very ripe and approachable, with gently serrated, ripe tannins. For early drinking. Lieux-dits Mazard, Champelrose, La Côte and Les Côtes. Whole bunch fermented, matured in barriques and demi-muids from three-year-old to eight-year-old barrels." Decanter 93 points (Blind Tasted by Matt Walls)
